Change in Privacy Protect services please read:

Change in Privacy Protect services please read:

Due to the forthcoming change in ICANN’s policy, the overhead costs of providing the Privacy Protect service will increase substantially. Starting soon, we will be charging an annual fee of $3 per domain name for our Privacy Protect service. With most Providers in the market charging as high as $6 per year, you could offer this as a chargeable service and still earn a profit on it!

Please Note:

For domain names that are already registered and use Privacy Protect service, no charge shall be levied till the domain name expires, or until the next renewal, whichever is earlier. At the time of renewal of the domain name, you will have the flexibility of not renewing Privacy Protect along with the domain name.
For domains names that are already registered and do not use Privacy Protect service, upon activation of this service, charges shall be applied on a pro-rata basis till the domain expires.
For any new domain registrations opting for Privacy Protection service, above mentioned annual charges will be applicable.
The duration of this service will be the same as the duration of the domain name it is associated with.

How to switch hosts without having any down time.

Switching to a new host can be a complicated process. Follow our steps to ensure that your move is smooth and painless.

1. The first step is to join your new host. Make sure to NOT cancel with your old hosting provider, and do not tell them you will be canceling. Keep this a secret from your old host, or they could prematurely terminate your site and cause downtime.

2. At this point, you should have hosting accounts with two hosting providers (the old and the new one). You will now migrate your entire site from the old host to the new one. This can be done by connecting to the old host's FTP and downloading all your files, and then by connecting to the new host's FTP and uploading all your files (maintain the same file and folder structure). If you choose to make 6DegreesHosting your new host, we may transfer your entire site over free of charge!

3. You must also backup any databases on the old host (contact the old host for instructions) and upload the backup files to the new host via FTP. You must then restore your databases from those backup files; this can be done via SSH or cPanel's phpMyAdmin. Emails do not normally transfer, but you can archive your emails from the old host. You can accomplish this by making a POP3 connection to each email address; this way all the old emails are downloaded to your local computer. The new host will not have those old emails, but the new host will be able to get new emails.

4. If you choose to make 6DegreesHosting your new host, we may transfer your entire site (files and databases) over free of charge! If your old host used cPanel, we may be able to transfer emails as well.

5. After you have a copy of your site on both hosting accounts, it is time to change your domain name's DNS....

6. After you have all your files on both hosting accounts, it is time to change your domain name's DNS. Your new host will provide you with the correct name servers (DNS). You may need to contact the new host to find out what DNS settings you will use for your domain name.

DNS name servers usually looks like this (replace "yourhostname.com" with your host's actual domain name):
ns1.yourhostname.com
ns2.yourhostname.com

Once you have the correct DNS, go to the company where you purchased your domain name to make the change. If you purchased your domain name from your host, you usually need to ask them to make the DNS changes for you. You can tell them something similar to, "Hello. My domain with you is _____.___ ; please, change my domain name's name servers to ns1._______.____ and ns2._______.____ ."

If you bought your domain name from 6DegreesHosting, we are more than happy to help you or even make the DNS changes for you.

7. Once your DNS changes have been made, you will need to wait 48 hours (two days) before your site will load from the new host. During this 48 hour period, your DNS is propagating world wide and your site will be randomly loading from either the old host or the new host. Once the two days is complete, your site will only be loading from the new host.

8. After the 48 hours have passed, your updated DNS will be fully functional. You will now contact your old host and cancel your hosting account with them. If you originally bought your domain name from the old host, do not cancel your domain registration.

If you completed all the above steps, you have successfully switched hosts with no downtime at all!

Server upgrades!

We are upgrading some of our older Conroe processor servers to Dual CPU Nehalem chassis on Tuesday Aug 3rd starting at around 8PM Pacific.
The actual downtime, barring unforseen circumstances should only be a couple of seconds. However, you may incur up to an hour of data loss in your home directory as we make the swap between old and new servers.

This should greatly increase the speed and performance on these servers and provide a better level of service. Your scripts shouldn't have any issues either, since the actual configurations are literally the exact same

Thank you,
6 Degrees Hosting Support

Change in Backup policy for our Unlimited Hosting Packages

We will be limiting the Back up feature on existing Linux ULTIMATE Unlimited Hosting Packages that are using the old infrastructure (not cPanel) from the 12th of May, 2010. As per the new limit, we will only store the last three back ups made for any existing package.
Current Scenario:
Currently, a Customer can make unlimited back ups of their packages and they are all stored on our servers.
This negatively affects our servers as it leads to:
  • Additional and unnecessary load
  • Exposure to potential abuse
New Implementation:
Through the new implementation, Customers will still be able to make back ups as frequently as required. However, only the last three back ups will be stored on our servers. Every time a new back up is made, the oldest back up will be replaced.
This implementation will be applicable from the 12th of May, 2010.
Important: Starting today, all new Back up Policies will be limited as per the new implementation of storing only three back ups.
If you require your previous back ups:
If you require old back ups, which are older than the last three made, they will need to download the back ups to their local machines before the 12th of May, 2010.

Thank you!

April 21st Server maintenance Server MARS

April 21, 10:03 AM - Back Up
Posted by: tony
The system is back up.

This is the kind of issue we dislike - spontaneous reboot, no error messages that point to an obvious reason however we are seeing a large number of unusual "probes" - which is usually the sign of hackers/exploiters looking for web sites/servers to infect.

We will be hardening the network against these, just in case!

But for now, we are back and running at full steam!
April 21, 8:45 AM - Spontaneous System Reboot
Posted by: tony
The server decided to spontaneously reboot with no reason or warning. Doing a file system data check and bringing it back online asap.

Will post when it's live!
